Our regular meeting is 5:30-10pm every Tuesday
at the Chevy Chase Community
Center. Please bring equipment if possible
and contribute $1 toward photocopying, etc.
Paired rounds begin at 5:30, about 6:15, 7:10, 8:05,
and at 9pm sharp. If you arrive during a round, you will
face a short wait for a game, but can partake of the snacks as you wait.

This past weekend, we had a special local club tournament
of 15 games within about 24 hours so that at least
3 people who can't take part on July 24 could
play some Scrabble. Bob Linn (the host) edged
out Winter to win with an 11-4 record. Winter was
10-5, Dan Milton 6-9 and Ted Gest 3-12.
Among the highlights: Winter and Ted played triple-
triples simultaneously on adjoining boards:
INLAYERS and STICKLER. Thanks to
Vince Castellano and Brian Galebach for
helping us set this up.

definitely welcome newcomers. As usual, we're
dividing the group into several divisions, so don't avoid
the tournament just because you're rusty or fear
being matched with a highly-ranked player. You'll
get some good competition and lots of fun.

From former club director Harold Rennett comes the
sad news that club founder Evelyn Howard
has died at 86:
Club founder Evelyn Howard passed away on January 15 in
Port St. Lucie, Fl.
She and her husband, Bill Holland, who survives her, hosted
the Chevy Chase club in the early 80s, and they are among
the finest people I have ever known. For a short time in the
early 80s, Evelyn and Dan Pratt hosted Sunday meetings of
Dan's Club 50 in Evelyn and Bill's home, and during that same
period, I accompanied Bill and Evelyn to Jan Beck's club
in Columbia many times on Monday nights. Despite the
fact that Evelyn and Bill -- but especially Evelyn -- could beat
a person up pretty badly in a game of Scrabble, Bill and Evelyn
were adored by everyone, everywhere. They were consistently
rays of sunshine who were genuinely as thrilled by the Scrabble
(and non-Scrabble) successes of their friends and acquaintances
as they were by their own. For Evelyn and Bill, Scrabble was
more than just a game that provided them literally tens of thousands
of hours of mental stimulation and competition over the years.
Scrabble was also a means to the end of establishing new
friendships and deepening existing ones.
Evelyn and Bill were greatly missed when they moved out of
the DC area to be closer to members of their large, close-knit,
loving families, most of whom I had the pleasure of meeting
when Bill and Evelyn finally "tied the knot" in the mid-90s
after years of "sinful" cohabitation. Just as those families no
doubt celebrated Evelyn's gifts to their lives when Evelyn
departed in January, we should all celebrate the contributions
that Evelyn made to our lives, including the lasting contribution
she has made to many people whom she never knew
-- the creation of Club 171.

Our club did very well at the June 13 tournament in
Wilmington, De. Bob Linn, David Koenig, and Vince
Castellano finished #1, 3, and 4 respectively in Div. 1.
Brian Galebach was #1 in Div. 2, and Dan Milton
finished first in Div. 3. All of the division winners had
6-1 records. In Div. 7, Carol Tillson also went 6-1
but missed first place by under 100 spread points.

inmates at the Montgomery County jail in Clarksburg
about once a month. It takes an afternoon of your

is not planned in the U.S. and will not supplant our regular game. See

Our own Charlie Williamson and Lily Gasperetti took 3rd place overall out of 95 teams
at the 2010 National School Scrabble Championship this past weekend in Orlando.
Charlie and Lily are rated players and have been occasional visitors to the club
for the last three years. They finished with a record of 5-1 +561, narrowly missing
a spot in the championship final. They won $2,000 and a bagful of prizes.
Congrats to Lily and Charlie and the other 10 D.C. players who competed in Orlando.
They all did great and had a blast, coach Stefan Fatsis reports.

were division winners in a 14-game spring tournament
sponsored by the Washington, D.C., NASPA club 171. The event
was held at the VisArts Center in suburban Rockville, Md.
77 players played in 4 divisions. Thanks to co-directors Ted Gest and
Carole Denton, and to Cheryl Kagan, Vince Castellano,
Alyssa Faria, Bob Linn, Brian Bailey, and Veronica
Thomas for other help. Joanne Cohen won a special $50
prize for the best word on health care policy: DISUNITY.

visiting from the Boston area, also had the biggest bingo,
a 158 point triple-triple (redheads), giving him also the highest game score at 535.
This play also helps explain how Ted Gest could be the only player
to win 4 games, and still finish with a negative point spread.

blanks--what you say out loud doesn't count. We can be more informal in club. If it's totally
obvious (e.g. TALK?NG) you can designate the blank aloud, but when there are many choices, like
?ASHING, please get into the habit of writing it down and showing it to your
opponent so there is no confusion.

one that sprung up when our parent organization,
NASPA, decided not to do a full newsletter but a
shorter "bulletin" instead. Take a look.
Meanwhile, the old National Scrabble Association
(concentrating now on school and "casual" Scrabble)
offers a one-time complimentary issue of its
newsletter by messaging tb@scrabble-assoc.com by
Jan. 22 with your mailing address and using
NEW NEWS as the subject line.
Last but not least, we should get into the habit of
writing down blank designations and showing them
to our opponents, to prevent confusion. A new tournament
rule on this will be going into effect Feb. 2. I'll
expand on this in a future message. Don't assume
if you play GLASSINg, for example, that your opponent
knows (from your mumbling it) that the blank is a G.
It could be an E, as in GLASSINe.
